Newton Parrish students take home items for family members for free

Newton Parrish Elementary School’s gymnasium transformed into an Amazon warehouse Friday, with each student taking home two items for someone in their life for free. The school is the first of several throughout the Owensboro Public Schools district that will host an Amazon Donation Day.
Amazon Donation Day is hosted by 4 Good Community’s School Outreach Program. Based in Henderson, the program serves 20,000 people weekly throughout the Commonwealth, according to its website.
Newton Parrish Principal Andrew Self said the event was a token of generosity.
“They’re not shopping for themselves. They’re shopping for an adult in their life, a parent, a friend, something that they could use, or something they can eat in their house. We’re really trying to do this mindfully and thinking of someone else,” Self said.
The items available were surplus and included a vast range of products: heaters, cooking utensils, catalytic converters, wall decorations, luggage, shoes, hats, folding wagons, and more. According to Self, all items were valued up to $800.
As the students made their way through the tables, they thought of how their mother, father, aunt, or another relative could use the item. The generosity began almost instantly, as several students huddled around a box to carry a heater or lawn chair for one youngster to bring back to their seat.
Self said that for students who selected an object too big to bring on the bus, the school would work with the family to get the item home safely.
According to OPS Public Information Officer Jared Revlett, the program will be extended to other schools in the district. By the end of the school year, 4 Good Community aims to offer the same opportunity to all schools in the Owensboro Public School district.

HENDERSON, Ky. (WFIE) - Several Tri-State organizations have been helping with Idalia relief efforts. That includes Henderson’s non-profit “4 Good Community”, which helps with various natural disasters. Officials and volunteers with the organization are filling kits with supplies that will go to survivors of the hurricane. Kyle Duckworth with the organization say the items in the kits will be essential to those who have lost their personal belongings.
”Even if they have insurance, it takes awhile so these essential hygiene kits, these are stuff they can use now in the time being that they’re waiting in either a shelter or hotel,” he explains. “Even things like a comic book... as silly as a comic book may be, things like this, but when you have nothing anything can go a long way.” The organization has already shipped hundreds of bags that will be in Jasper, Florida tomorrow.

Local pop-up shops teach children the importance of sharing

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WFIE) - One organization in the Tri-State is hoping to teach children about sharing.
4 Good Community has set up pop up shops in Evansville and Henderson. Children can pick out three gifts for free - one to keep for themselves and two to give to others.
The stores are open to children between 3 and 17.
4 Good Community’s director of development, Kyle Duckworth, says it’s important to teach this new generation the importance of generosity so we can change our world for the better.
”So the purpose of this center is really to plant seeds of generosity. The world is full of takers,” he says. “‘What can I get? What can I get?’ But if we can teach children to give to those, whether a family member or friends, someone at school in need, that’s the real main reason for this center is to get kids educated on what it means to be givers.”
Both store locations take turns operating every weekend.

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WFIE) - Henderson nonprofit “4 Good Community” is putting the “good” back into the community by way of outreach events.
Sherry Oakley was one of over 500 people that stopped by the parked “4 Good Community” bus on Thursday to pick up donated items.
“We are totally blessed every time we come out here,” said Oakley. “You never know what you’re going to get or what kind of people you’re going to run into.”
Kyle Duckworth, the nonprofit director of development, says drinks, food, home decorations, blankets and many more items were able to be picked up from their blue bus. Duckworth says the South Green River Road outreach event is the third one they have hosted so far this year.
“We’re called to be good stewards all of us and we have the resources and we want to be able to bless other people, especially during these times where people are going hungry,” said Duckworth. “People are wondering how am I going to pay for anything? And so it’s just a huge blessing.”
Duckworth says the nonprofit served over 110,000 people throughout the course of 2022. He says they hope to continue meeting the need of the Tri-State throughout the rest of 2023.
According to Duckworth, free outreach event supplies came from several donors. He says Ikea, Home Goods and a few others made Thursday’s event possible.

4th Annual Hope for the Holidays giveaway serves Kentucky foster families and community

HENDERSON, Ky. (WEVV)— The 4th Annual Hope for the Holidays Giveaway took place today, bringing joy and essential resources to foster families across Kentucky. Hosted by Foster Care in the U.S. and 4Good Community, the event was held at the West Side Walmart in Henderson, focusing on providing support to families in need during the holiday season.
This year, over 70 families registered for the event, with organizers expecting attendance numbers comparable to last year’s turnout of 1,800 participants. Foster parents and families from across the region—including Dawson Springs and Union County—lined up to receive new clothes, toys, food baskets, and other essentials.
“Hope for the Holidays has grown into one of the largest giveaways we've done, and we’re honored to support such a diverse community,” said Jessica, Foster Care in the U.S. “It’s an event we look forward to all year.”
The event has its roots in a backpack program designed to supply school supplies for children in need. Four years ago, 4Good Community partnered with Foster Care in the U.S. to expand the initiative into a holiday giveaway, addressing a gap in toy drives for Kentucky families outside of Salvation Army efforts.
Participants in the giveaway received food baskets featuring smoked hams, and more. The program relies on funds raised through an annual online auction, with proceeds directly funding the giveaway.
Last year’s overwhelming response saw the registration website temporarily crash due to high traffic. Despite fewer families signing up this year, the event continued to meet the needs of the local community.
